Background of the NURI programme and the one year extension

Resilience design (RD): Lessons in infrastructure, water management and food forest activities

In NURI, the RD approach incorporated designs responding to environment, hydrological behavior within micro-catchment and the ecology of project areas. Through RD implementation, many projects were interconnected for example, with soil and water conservation linked to recharging springs, water from road drainage structures feeding into small dams, and dams built to protect roads from damage by heavy rain episodes.

Planting the Rain for increased Soil and Crop Production

One of the main pillars of climate-smart agriculture is crop productivity which has been greatly hindered by effects of climate change. Attempts to increase water availability to crop will not only address this challenge but also increase the resilience of the soil for crop productivity. The concept of Resilience Designs is an integration of several researched approaches aimed at improving soil productivity including; permaculture, conservation agriculture, climate-smart agriculture, bio-intensive planting and agroecology.

On-farm management of aflatoxins in farmer’s produce

Aflatoxin is a poisonous compound produced by a fungi Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. This fungus mainly invades not-well-dried crops as maize, groundnuts, soybean, sorghums, cassava and millet as host for their reproduction. It’s a potent cause of cancer and associated health risks through liver and kidney disease and suppression of immune system in both humans and animals
